Difference between a Sauna and a Steam room:
A sauna is a dry space that only needs an electrical connection. Saunas can reach temperatures of 212°F. The humidity is very low in a sauna (only 20-30%). You are seated on a naturally finished wooden bench. A steam room (also known as a Turkish bath/Hamman) is a wet space where temperatures do not exceed 120°F but humidity is very high (90 – 100%). You are seated on marble or natural stone surrounded my mist.

“First build your sauna and then build your house” is the old Finnish saying that translates the importance of experiencing warm, dry air and its impact on peoples lives. When you are in a sauna, and you are smelling the perfume that the natural wood gives off you are allowing yourself to rediscover the inner peace that nature provides. As we sweat, we are able to relax and detoxify which positively influences the mind and body. Sitting and sweating in the high heat allows our body to rebalance through eliminating nervous system tension and reducing anxiety. The skin is also cleansing itself and eliminating acids and toxins through sweat. The neurovegetative system is also stimulated, improving overall metabolism.
Health Benefits of a Steam room:
We all know that you need to drink water. It is vital to keep our bodies hydrated to keep ourselves functioning properly. We can live without food for as long as a month but cannot live without water for more than three or four days. This is one of the main reasons why steam rooms are so beneficial to our wellbeing. When you are in a steam room surrounded by mist, inhaling the warm steam, and allowing your pores to dilate your body is able to release stress and reduce tension. In addition, when our pores open, our skin is able to get rid of impurities and be left clear, elastic, and soft. Steam also has the ability to clear up any congestion of the throat, head, or lunges due to the high humidity of the air. We are left feeling rejuvenated, rebalanced, and clear minded.
History of Sauna & Steam Rooms:
Here in North America there is not as much history regarding spas. In other parts of the world Sauna and steam therapy goes back to 212 AD. In Rome you can go back and see the ruins of the Baths of Caracalla which is composed of multiple rooms filled with different baths. The multiple rooms have such a clear picture and understanding that different temperatures mean different treatments. There would be warmer rooms (Tepodariums) where you would start, then hot rooms with steam (Caldarium), dry sweating rooms (Laconicum), and finally a cold plunge (Frigidarium). Because people did not have public plumbing not only was it a space to bath and clean themselves but was also a space for meetings and family which is why the European lifestyle has such strong ties with wellness. This was not just happening in Italy but, in their own way, Turkey, Finland & China were all participating in these ancient rituals.
Specifically in Finland, saunas have a very long and strong history. There would be rooms built with the fire going to create this dry, heated space. Eventually a chimney was put in to release the smoke and then finally, the electric sauna was created, which is what we focus on today.
